Parent Club specialty shows are always a real treat to judge, as they attract a beautiful group of dogs from a much broader area than most
shows. Your specialty was a privilege to judge, and I was honored to do it.
I certainly thank the show committee for the fine job that they did, and also for the surprise birthday cake that we had during a break in the
judging. It was really sweet of you all to do it, and made up for me being gone from my family during that time.
The overall quality of the entry was better than I typically see at all breed shows around the country, where unfortunately the majority these days
are rather common looking larger size dogs. It was a great pleasure to see the majority at your specialty were good quality dogs. I did feel that
the best quality in the classes was in the males. Bitches were a bit weaker overall.
I was very pleased with my Winners Dog, Deanna’s See Spot Win, and Winners Bitch, Blazen Marachin Rosa Maria. Both are beautiful examples
of the breed with pleasing head and ears, proper structure and balance, and adequate movement. The specials class was filled with quality, and I
was able to find many that I felt were worthy of recognition when I did my cut. The final two males were both top quality, and very similar. My final
selection was CH Titians Late Night, which on this day was doing better dealing with the outdoor ring on grass than the eventual Select Dog GCH
Brevette Kid Incredible. As you may know I judged the Toy Group on Saturday during the cluster, and on that day the dog that I had put Select was
the Best of Breed winner. I placed him Group 4th in a very strong group.
I would like to make a few general comments about the status of the breed, and how I judge it. The rapid growth in popularity of the Papillion has
led to a lowering of overall quality in the breed in recent years. There are still some excellent dogs around, as evidenced by your specialty, but
the majority now tend to be rather course and common, heavier in bone than desired, and rather plain in the face. In your breed I place priority on
a pretty head with well carried ears of good size, a pleasing outline, and overall daintiness as called for in the standard.
My approach to judging most of the toy breeds is to emphasize breed specific type characteristics as my first priority, make a cut to select these
out, and then find the soundest dogs within this subset to become my winners. When it comes down to final selections the decision for me is
usually about ears and expression. I want good large ear leathers and beautiful ear placement and carriage. Nice long ear fringe is “icing on the
cake” too, yielding the prettiest expression.
